This song was originally written in 1973 by Elton John and Bernie Taupin, in honour of Marilyn Monroe, as a tribute dedicated to a fragile and vulnerable woman. In 1997, a few days after Lady Diana’s death, Elton John performed a new version of the song at her funeral in Westminster Abbey. It became the bestselling single in history.
