Safe and Sound

Salve Speak Up!
Ho visto che la traduzione inglese dell’espressione ‘sano e salvo’ è ‘safe and sound’, ma da qualche parte ho sentito anche ‘safe and sane’. Quest’ultima è corretta?

Hi Maria,
I’m afraid ‘safe and sane’ is incorrect, but it doesn’t surprise me that you have doubts given that you found it on the internet! I imagine that this is a false friend, as the English word ‘sane’ sounds like the Italian word ‘sano (fisicamente)’. In fact, the word actually means ‘sana (di mente)’. ‘Sound’, on the other hand, apart from meaning ‘sonido’, also means ‘in buona salute’. Rachel
