Down Under

Nell’articolo “I met my dad when he saved my life” (Speak Up giugno) il secondo paragrafo inizia con il titolo Down Under, riferito all’Australia che si trova nell’emisfero meridionale. Ma mi domando: gli australiani hanno un soprannome analogo per l’Europa?

As far as we know, Australia doesn’t have a common slang term for Europe, but it does have one for the British. The “Aussies” call them “poms.” This is an abbreviation of pomegranate (melagrana), a slang term for immigrant, but also a reference to a typical British immigrant’s red, sunburnt skin*!
