Like or as?

Hi everybody! I’m Matteo, 25, from Italy. My question is (probably) very elementary but I just can’t get through it. Can you explain the difference between “like” and “as”? In Italian we translate both of them with “come”: “I’m free as a bird!” (“Sono libero come un uccello”), “I am like you.” (Sono come te). Thanks a lot!
