Aarrgghh!!! Pizza, anyone?
LANGUAGE LEVEL B1 (LOWER INTERMEDIATE)
The gem on the left was seen at a famous restaurant in Milan which is popular with foreign tourists. Milan is, of course, the capital of design, but it is unlikely that anyone coming here with a view to buying a new “kitchen” would actually go to a restaurant. Presumably, the owners have confused the two different meanings of the word cucina, which can either be translated as kitchen (the place where you prepare food), or cooking and cuisine (the food itself). Ironically, the owners didn’t need to translate this word, as a pizzeria in London or Chicago wouldn’t specify that it also served “normal food.” But, if it did have an announcement like this, then it would probably translate “cucina” as “hot food.”
If you see English mistakes (in Italy, the UK, anywhere!) that make you scream “Aarrgghh!!!” please take a photo and send it to redazione@speakupmagazine.it We will publish the best (that is, the worst) both here and on our Facebook page.
