WORD: Punk

Per noi italiani “punk” è un genere musicale o un look, in inglese ha anche un significato diverso che, curiosamente, è anche un insulto! Inizialmente indicava una prostituta, poi un uomo effeminato e infine un criminale… LANGUAGE LEVEL B2 (UPPER INTERMEDIATE)

Mark Worden: (Standard British accent)

The word punk is usually associated with punk rock, a type of loud music played by the Sex Pistols and others in the 1970s, but this is in fact only one of the word’s meanings (1). Punk began life in the 16th century as a term for a prostitute, and it later became an insult, first for an effeminate male, and later for a small-time (2) criminal. The most famous example comes in the 1971 Clint Eastwood movie, Dirty Harry, in which “Dirty Harry,” an Inspector in San Francisco, tells a small-time criminal, “Do you feel lucky punk?” This is what people think that Eastwood says. What he actually says is, “You gotta ask yourself one question: ‘Do I feel lucky?’ Well, do ya, punk?”
